About the game

Helldivers 2 is a co-op third-person shooter where squads of up to four players drop from orbit onto hostile planets to spread managed democracy on behalf of Super Earth. Above all it's a game about coordination: you don't win by aiming better, you win by moving and talking like a team.

Stratagems, friendly fire and a galactic war

Its signature idea is the stratagem system: you punch in directional key combos to call down orbital strikes, turrets, vehicles and resupplies in the middle of a fight. Because friendly fire is always on, every grenade, every barrage and every mis-thrown stratagem can wipe out a teammate, so the tension comes not just from the enemy but from your own firepower. Above individual missions sits a persistent galactic war: the whole community's combined effort decides which planets are liberated or lost to the insectoid Terminids, the robotic Automatons and the alien Illuminate.

A squad deployed on a hostile planet: every mission is an exercise in coordination under fire.

The tone is unfiltered militaristic satire in the vein of Starship Troopers: Super Earth's propaganda wraps around everything —menus, broadcasts, mission names— and the joke lands both in that layer and in the sheer chaos of a run going sideways. It's rare for a game to be this fun to play and this sharp in its commentary at the same time.

What you pay for and what you don't

It's a Buy to Play game with no subscription: you pay once and you're in. The standard edition runs about USD 39.99 and the Super Citizen Edition about USD 59.99, adding an exclusive weapon, armor and cape plus a premium warbond token. You can buy it on Steam, on PlayStation and, since August 2025, on Xbox Series X|S too, with full crossplay across platforms.

Post-launch content is almost all cosmetics and gear, unlocked through Warbonds (content passes that never expire). Premium ones cost ~1,000 Super Credits, a currency you earn by playing or buy with real money, and there's a rotating Super Store. Collaborations —like the Halo ODST or Killzone warbonds— cost 1,500 Super Credits and don't accept the free token. By today's standards it's a generous model: you can play for years without spending an extra cent, and nothing sold touches game balance.

Where it's at

Helldivers 2 is Live and in its third year of active support. It launched on February 8, 2024 on PC and PS5 and reached Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025. Arrowhead moved to a structured roadmap: Patch 6.1.0 (March 2026) added new Illuminate enemies, planetary hazards (Exostorms) and the Entrenched Division warbond, with more updates planned through mid-2026. The player base is still strong —peaks of ~100,000 concurrent players on Steam around recent warbonds and millions active monthly— held up by that galactic war giving you a reason to come back every week.

The front shifts week to week: liberating or losing planets is on the entire community.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

It's one of the best co-op games around right now, built to be played with three teammates and voice comms: that's where friendly fire stops being a punishment and becomes comedy and strategy at once. If you like squad shooters, difficulty that rewards planning and pitch-black humor, it's an easy buy. The honest flip side: solo or with mic-less strangers it loses much of its charm, objective repetition shows in long sessions, and the stratagem curve can overwhelm early on. Knowing that, there are few better places to drop from orbit.
