About the game

Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter where up to four players step into the boots of dwarven miners working for a shady intergalactic corporation. Every expedition drops into the procedurally generated, fully destructible caves of planet Hoxxes IV to dig up minerals, hit objectives and outlast waves of alien wildlife before escaping in the drop pod. No two runs play the same: the map is carved, collapsed and reshaped one pickaxe swing at a time. You can check it out and grab it on Steam.

Four classes that need each other

What sets Deep Rock apart isn't just the digging, it's how it forces you to split the work. Its four classes —Gunner, Scout, Engineer and Driller— carry weapons and traversal tools that genuinely complement each other: the Gunner strings ziplines across chasms, the Scout fires flares and swings through the dark on a grappling hook, the Engineer drops platforms and turrets, and the Driller bores shortcuts straight through the rock. On higher hazard levels, going it alone is the fastest way to get swarmed. It all rests on diggable terrain, rowdy humor and a battle cry that's become the studio's signature: Rock and Stone.

What you pay for, what you don't

Deep Rock Galactic is Buy to Play: you pay once (reference price USD 29.99, and it regularly drops below ten dollars in Steam sales) and every piece of actual gameplay content comes with that purchase. The Deluxe, Master and Dwarven Legacy editions only pile on cosmetic packs, the soundtrack or a Supporter Pack — nothing that touches how the game plays. All five seasons released so far are free, with no paid battle pass, no rotating shop and no FOMO; the only microtransactions are armor and cosmetic DLC. In short, it's one of the most honest models in the genre.

Where it stands today

The game is Live and actively supported. The current season is Season 5 "Digging Deeper" (June 2024), while Season 6, bringing the new Ossuary Depths biome, has been pushed to Q1 2026 as Ghost Ship split its resources across spin-offs. Because the franchise has grown: Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor (2024) and Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core, which hit Early Access in May 2026. The base game draws around 5,000-6,000 concurrent players on Steam in mid-2026 —far from its all-time peak of 54,106, and down a bit lately— but that's still a healthy number for a niche PvE co-op. You can follow what's next on the official roadmap.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

Deep Rock Galactic shines when you play it with friends: teamwork, humor and one of the friendliest communities in the genre are its real engine. If you want a laid-back co-op with a high skill ceiling, short sessions and a massive progression grind free of seasonal pressure, it's hard to point you anywhere better. It is not, however, a competitive or story-driven game: there's no narrative to follow and no PvP, and solo play —bots aside— loses much of its charm. If you came for a campaign or a shooter to show off against others, this isn't the place. For everything else: head down the mine, watch your teammates' backs and answer the call. Rock and Stone.
