About the game

Honkai: Star Rail is the turn-based RPG from HoYoverse, the Genshin Impact studio, built as a science-fiction campaign wrapped in gacha structure. Aboard the Astral Express you travel between self-contained planets: a station at war, a frozen empire, a civilization built around spectacle. Each one arrives with its own tone, its own cast and its own puzzles, explored on foot.

Fights are turn-based with teams of four, and most encounters come down to breaking an enemy's elemental weakness before it gets to act. Every unit follows a Path that fixes its job (damage, support, shielding, healing) and equips Light Cones and Relics, which is where the long-term optimization lives.

Encounters are resolved by breaking elemental weakness before the enemy acts.

Worth stating plainly what it isn't: there's no shared world, no guilds, no co-op. It's a single-player live-service game with a new version every six weeks carrying story, events and warp banners. Whatever community there is happens outside the client, in guides and forums.

What you pay for, and what you don't

It's a free download from the official site on PC, mobile and PS5, and the full campaign can be cleared without paying, using free characters. Money goes to Warps for 5-star characters and Light Cones, with a guaranteed pity counter. Currency packs run from US$0.99 to US$99.99, plus two optional recurring buys: a monthly pass at roughly US$4.99 and the US$9.99 battle pass per version.

Where it stands

Support is still steady: a version every six weeks, two banners each, new story and events every time. By mid-2026 it was on 4.4 and the Planarcadia arc that opened in February. The peak is behind it, though: the game passed 100 million downloads in February 2024, and mobile revenue has been falling year over year since 2025, the usual curve for a gacha in its fourth year.

Every planet shifts visual register; the art direction is one of the reasons to keep going.

It's for players who want a turn-based RPG with sharp writing, real voice work and art direction that changes on every planet, and who don't mind playing alone. Against it: the install runs past 30 GB, there's no Xbox version, and the endgame modes (Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, Apocalyptic Shadow) rotate affinities every few weeks, so power creep bites anyone with a thin roster.
