About the game

La Tale is a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG: you run, jump and swing across platforms, with saturated anime art and a long climb spread over three continents. Actoz Soft launched it in Korea in 2006, and Papaya Play has published it in the West since June 2017, when it took over from OGPlanet. MapleStory is the obvious comparison, and it's a fair one.

Platform combat with the saturated anime art the game has carried since 2006.

Ten base classes, fifty-plus paths

The class system is what separates it from other side-scrollers. Steam lists ten base classes branching into more than fifty job specialties, and subclasses swap in town, so trying another branch doesn't mean leveling a second character. Once your level stops moving, Ascension and Awakening are the systems that carry the endgame.

What you pay for

It's free to play, with no box price and no subscription. The shop runs on LTC, the premium currency you buy with real money on the Papaya Play portal, covering cosmetics, pets and random crates: around 110 LTC each and 1,000 LTC for ten. On top of that sit a battle pass, introduced with the Orcarium update, and the Royal Gacha with a guaranteed prize, added in March 2026. There's no published dollar price table, so what you actually spend depends on the LTC pack you buy.

Where it stands today

It's still live, and still patched regularly. The current content is Episode 37, Devil's Whisper, released alongside the Path of Choice update on June 18, 2026 for the game's ninth anniversary under Papaya Play: new towns and dungeons, Dungeon Points progression, changes to Special Enchant and Awakening Stone crafting, over 71,000 inactive character names freed up, and server time moved to ET.

Before that came Smiley Face (March 2026), with a side story and inventory quality-of-life work players had been asking about for years, mass actions included. Big episodes land months apart, and the gap gets filled with monthly events (the August 2026 Festa, for one) and crossover collaborations with other Papaya titles such as Echo of Soul.

The game's three continents keep growing: Episode 37 added new towns and dungeons.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

It fits anyone who wants a platforming MMORPG with enormous room to experiment with builds and can live with an interface and rough edges straight out of 2006. On Steam the reviews sit at 58% positive out of 574 (Mixed), and there are no public population figures or announced roadmap: that percentage and the patch cadence are the only gauges available. Anyone after a polished, densely populated MMO is better served elsewhere.
