Last Chaos

Last Chaos is a Korean fantasy MMORPG that launched in 2006 and is somehow still running, which almost nothing from its generation can claim. It takes place on the continent of Iris and offers nine classes that branch into two specializations at level 31. T-Entertainment built it; Fawkes Games publishes it today.

The structure is the genre at its most old-fashioned: monsters killed in batches for hours, a very high level ceiling, and gear enchanted with stones that can destroy it in the attempt. Guilds fight over castles in open sieges.

Two systems set it apart from its contemporaries. Pets are captured, raised and evolved, and some grant combat bonuses or double as mounts. Crafting is the other pillar, and it carries more weight here than in most games of its era.

It is free with no subscription: no limited trial, no entry barrier. What funds it is the in-game store, the Iris Mall, which runs on Fawkes Gems since the migration to Fawkes (old Iris Cash balances were converted when the currency changed). The flagship item is the Premium Character Package, a bundle of around eight perks, including a passive +10% to EXP and SP.

Its long-standing problem is how much goes through that store: armor, leveling supplies, the vast majority of potions and nearly every pet, including the ones with large damage and speed bonuses. Prices are not published outside the client, so you only see them after installing and logging in.

Fawkes Games has published it since 2023, after Aeria Games and gamigo, and patches it regularly. The studio calls its current plan Modernize: an in-house launcher (Fawkes Hub), skill rebalancing, enchanting adjustments and work on class balance and PvP. The big pending content drop is Episode 5: Ashes of the Elderwood, with a new zone, dungeons with scaling difficulty, sieges for up to eight guilds at once and a new melee class that fights with a magic whip. Its date has already slipped once, so check it on the official site.

Fawkes publishes no population figures, and the official version appears to run on a single server; the private-server scene is still active and gives you the real scale: a niche game held up by nostalgia. If you played it fifteen years ago, or you want a slow grind of the old kind, it is there and it works. If you are coming from a modern MMORPG, the mid-2000s graphics, the interface and the weight of the store are three walls in a row.
