About the game

Shaiya is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG built around one simple, merciless idea: the endless war between the Alliance of Light and the Union of Fury. When you roll a character you pick a side for good and one of twelve classes spread across four races, and from there almost everything you do —leveling, farming, gearing up— points to the same place: faction PvP. This isn't a world for sightseeing; it's a battlefield with two standing armies.

What sets it apart: the difficulty modes

The thing it's remembered for is its opt-in difficulty system: Easy, Normal, Hard and the infamous Ultimate mode. The higher the mode, the slower and harsher the grind, but the more stats and skills you unlock. Ultimate pushes the bet all the way with permadeath: if you fall and no priest resurrects you in time, the character is deleted for good. It's the kind of mechanic that turns a simple fight into something that actually has stakes, and a big part of Shaiya's identity lives right there.

PvP is the heart of the game and it's large-scale: raids on enemy strongholds, altar captures that hand buffs to your whole side, and open battles that can pull in hundreds of players. Wrapped around that is a ring of old-school systems —crafting, gear upgrading, world bosses— that mostly exist to feed that war. Anyone coming for guided story or cozy instances will feel out of place; anyone coming for the competitive grind and the tension of faction warfare will feel at home.

Business model: free, but keep your wallet close

There's no upfront purchase and no mandatory subscription: you can play free from start to finish. The premium currency is Fawkes Gems, bought on the official site and spent in the in-game item mall —consumables, cosmetics, boosts, resurrection items and gear upgrades—. The fine print is well known: high-level competitive progress, and above all surviving in Ultimate without losing your character, push hard toward spending on consumables and crafting/upgrade accelerators. That's why Shaiya has long been flagged as an MMO with a strong pay-to-win streak; Fawkes says it has tuned the economy and loyalty rewards to soften that, but it's worth going in with clear eyes.

Current status: alive and maintained

Launched in 2007 by Sonov Entertainment, Shaiya passed through several hands —Aeria Games and later gamigo— until that operation shut down in early 2023. Today official publishing sits with Fawkes Games, which keeps the game running on unified servers with frequent patches: over 150 accumulated updates, from stability fixes for large-scale PvP to reworks of core systems and new content. The population is modest but stable, on the order of a few thousand concurrent players: don't expect a packed world, but it's no ghost server either. It's also worth knowing that several versions of the IP are floating around —a Classic edition, a mobile one, a Steam release on the way from a different publisher, and a very active private-server scene—, so searching for it will turn up more than one 'Shaiya'.

Is it for you?

Shaiya is an old-school title, unforgiving about farming and gear, made for players who enjoy competitive progress and real risk. If the idea of picking a side, climbing in Ultimate knowing every death counts, and fighting faction wars with hundreds of players appeals to you, few MMOs offer that exact mix today. If instead you want a friendly game with even progression and no store pressure, this isn't your place: the barrier to entry is high, the graphics show their age, and the economy rewards those who spend. Knowing all that, it remains an experience with a character of its own and a community that has held on for nearly two decades.
