About the game

Undawn is an open-world survival game set on a planet ravaged by a catastrophe that left the landscape crawling with zombies and other creatures. It's built by LightSpeed Studios —the team behind PUBG Mobile— and published by Level Infinite, Tencent's global label. The pitch blends exploration, third-person shooting, crafting, building your own settlement, and light RPG-style character progression. You can play solo or co-op, and its social side —shared servers, factions, and community goals— pushes it toward a lightweight MMO rather than a purely solo survival game.

What sets it apart

Undawn's hook was never a single original idea but the ambition to fold many genres into one open world: shooter, survival, base-building, and a persistent social layer, all with big-budget production and available on both PC and mobile with shared progress. On paper it's a generous, accessible co-op survival game; in practice its identity ended up blurry, caught between the casual mobile player and the PC player looking for depth. That's its most defining trait today: a huge, competent game that never quite found its audience.

Business model

Undawn is free to play: you download it at no cost on Steam, Google Play, and the App Store, with no entry fee or monthly subscription. Monetization follows the familiar Tencent free-to-play pattern: season passes (battle pass), cosmetics, and an in-game store with premium items and currency. There's no paywall gating access to the game or its core content —what you pay for is mostly personalization and convenience— so trying it costs nothing but the download.

Current status

The game is still live and playable, but clearly in decline. After a launch peak of around 8,500 concurrent players on Steam in June 2023, the population dropped more than 90% and today sits at just a few hundred concurrent players on PC (with mobile on top of that). The launch was backed by a massive marketing push —including a Will Smith cameo— but reception was lukewarm and the game never took off commercially. Over time there were server merges in North America and updates grew further apart, with forum complaints about the lack of patches. There's no shutdown announcement, but support looks minimal and the roadmap uncertain.

Who is it for?

Undawn can work for anyone after a free co-op survival with no entry friction, with cross-play between PC and mobile, and for players who enjoy building a settlement and exploring a post-apocalyptic world without hardcore demands. The zero price makes it easy to recommend as a curiosity. But let's be honest: the population is low, new content trickles in, and the game's future isn't guaranteed. If you want a large, active community or a survival game with long-term support, there are sturdier options right now. For more details and to download it, the starting point is its official site.
