About the game

Aion is the fantasy MMORPG NCSOFT launched in 2008 and has kept running for more than fifteen years. It all takes place in Atreia, a world torn in two after the fall of the Tower of Eternity: the light-blessed Elyos and the shadow-hardened Asmodians wage endless war while both sides fight the Balaur, the dragon race threatening the planet. You play a Daeva, a winged demigod who levels through a lore-heavy campaign until unlocking flight.

Flight isn't a gimmick

What sets Aion apart is that flight is no decoration: fighting in the air, gaining altitude and using the terrain is a core part of combat. On top of that sits a skill-chain system that rewards linking attacks in the right order, twelve classes across the genre's classic roles, and seven crafting professions for players who enjoy the crafting loop. Progression blends the main campaign with co-op dungeons of rising difficulty.

The world of Atreia, where flight is part of combat.

The Abyss, its signature

Aion's signature is the Abyss, a permanently contested zone where PvPvE becomes the engine of the game: faction conflict collides with the dragon threat and control of fortresses is settled in massive sieges with dozens of players on screen. This is where flight truly shines, and where many veterans found the best stories of their years in Atreia.

Sieges for fortress control are the heart of the PvPvE.

What you pay for and what you don't

Aion started with a monthly subscription and went free-to-play in April 2012. There's no fee today: it's monetized through an item shop — cosmetics, mounts, and progression/convenience boosters — plus time-limited passes and events. The modern Western version is published by NCSOFT in North America and Gameforge in Europe. Beyond the official circuit, hundreds of free private servers recreate specific patches and now hold a large share of the active community.

Where it stands today

In 2026 Aion is still live and supported. Two official branches coexist in the West: the modern one, which in North America runs on the merged “Ascend” servers — with faster progression, quality-of-life upgrades and the Dread Blade class in the Ascend 5.0 update — and Aion Classic, which recreates the older patches many remember fondly (in Europe, Gameforge shipped the 4.5 “Ignite” update in 2026, adding the Phoenix class). Worth being honest: the population on official servers is low compared to its golden years, and a big share of players live on private servers.

Fifteen years on, Atreia keeps its visual identity.

One thing to avoid confusion: Aion 2 is a separate game, built on Unreal Engine 5 and slated for a global launch in September 2026. This page covers the original Aion; if you're after the new one, that's a different title.

Who it's for

Aion is for anyone after a classic fantasy MMORPG with flashy combat, real verticality thanks to flight, and faction PvP that still has soul. If you're coming from the modern theme-park and want something with its own identity — or if old-school MMO nostalgia is pulling at you — it's worth a try, starting from the official site in North America or Gameforge in Europe; it's also listed on Steam. Now the downsides: grind is in its DNA, the cash-shop balance sparks debate, and on official servers it can be hard to find people outside peak hours. Anyone who goes in knowing this and enjoys sieges and flight will find a world that, fifteen years on, is still one of a kind.
