Chrono Odyssey
About the game
Chrono Odyssey is an action MMORPG in development at South Korean studio Chrono Studio, part of Npixel, and published by Kakao Games. Built on Unreal Engine 5, it offers a seamless open world spanning grasslands, snowfields, swamps and other biomes with no loading screens breaking up exploration. The visual ambition is obvious from the first minute; what the game still has to prove is that its execution matches its presentation.
What sets it apart: the Chronotector
The core hook is the Chronotector, an artifact that grants limited control over time. You can freeze it around enemies, rewind your own actions, or alter the environment, and these mechanics don't live only in combat: they're also used to solve exploration and get past obstacles in the world. It's the idea that separates Chrono Odyssey from the tide of Korean action MMORPGs it shares a mold with, and much of its identity rides on that system feeling as good as it sounds.
Combat is fast, aim-based action, built around six classes that shape how you play: Swordsman, Berserker, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer and Paladin. Each carves out a recognizable role within the party, from tanking to ranged damage or support. For the endgame it promises dungeons and raids you can tackle solo or in a group, plus a gathering and crafting system that underpins the economy and progression.
Current state
The game is in development with no firm date. After a first closed beta in the summer of 2025 (on PC, via Steam), the studio published a lengthy response committing to rewriting the narrative, making combat more responsive, and improving optimization and graphical fidelity. The launch originally aimed at late 2025, slipped to 2026, and some reports now place it in 2027. Npixel has not confirmed a date for a second test. Take any window with caution: this is a project that has already moved its date more than once.
The reception of that first test was lukewarm: plenty of visual ambition, but execution still rough around animations, camera and performance. That gap between the promise and the hands-on build is, right now, the project's biggest question mark.
Business model
Chrono Odyssey will be buy-to-play: a single purchase grants access to the game, no subscription. Kakao Games confirmed there will be no pay-to-win mechanics; additional monetization is expected through a cosmetics store and future content in the form of paid expansions. It's confirmed for PC —on Steam and the Epic Games Store—, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There's no price or editions announced yet; you can follow updates on the official site.
Who it's for and why to keep an eye on it
If you're drawn to open-world action MMORPGs with aim-based combat and a central mechanic with real personality —time control—, Chrono Odyssey is one of the more interesting projects in its category to keep on your radar. The no-subscription, no-pay-to-win model is a point in its favor for anyone burned by other takes on the genre. That said, be honest about expectations: there's still no date, the beta raised real execution doubts, and the game has yet to prove its combat and performance live up to what it shows. It's a game to watch, not yet one to take for granted.
