Hero's Land
About the game
Hero's Land is an open-world, top-down PvPvE survival MMO from Chinese studio Orienjoy. The premise is simple and merciless: you land on a hostile island with no script and no quest markers, and from there the law of the jungle takes over. There's no campaign to hold your hand and no objectives lighting the way forward; surviving, growing and choosing who to test yourself against are entirely your problem, solo or in a team.

The loop: farm safe or risk it all
What sets Hero's Land apart is the thrill of losing everything. As you explore you unlock heroes with distinct abilities, tame pets that fight at your side, and pick up weapons with unique effects that drop from monsters and bosses, swapping them on the fly to suit each fight. But die in the dangerous zones and you shed levels and gear, so every run onto the map is a gamble: play it safe farming, or push for the good loot knowing a rival—or a boss—can knock you right back to square one.
On top of that core, the game stacks modes for every mood: team dungeons, guild wars, battle-royale arenas and rotating maps like Brawl Legends. It's a design built for fast, chaotic sessions rather than slow, patient progression; you drop in, make some noise for twenty minutes and get out.

Free, but read the fine print
Hero's Land is free-to-play and cross-platform: you can play it on PC via Steam and on mobile, with the app available on Google Play and iOS, and every version shares the same model. There's no upfront purchase and no subscription: you can play without spending a cent. The catch is that the store sells heroes, pets, talents, gear and premium currency, and a good chunk of the competitive edge is bought. Spending is optional but heavily incentivized, especially if you want to compete on even terms in the open-world PvP. That's why a sizable part of the community flatly calls it pay-to-win.
Current state
The game has been Live since its launch on May 17, 2023, and it still gets frequent updates: regular patches and new maps over the past year. The population picture, though, is honest and not especially encouraging: after a peak of around 37,000 concurrent players on Steam in early 2024, it now hovers at just one to one-and-a-half thousand, with recent reviews sliding to Mostly Negative and overall reviews sitting at Mixed. There are servers and support, but it's a considerably emptier world than at its peak.

Who is it for?
Its real draw is the open-world PvP and that rush of knowing every death costs you dearly; if you're after short, chaotic sessions with genuine stakes, there's something real here, and it's free to try on top of that. But go in with your eyes open: the microtransaction model is very aggressive and the game doesn't separate players by level, so a newcomer can run straight into griefers and smurfs who wipe the floor with them. If you can stomach that mix of tension and imbalance—and you're not fixated on beating whoever paid—Hero's Land will hand you some memorable matches. If pay-to-win is a dealbreaker for you, this probably isn't your game, and it's only fair to say so.
