Ragnarok X: Next Generation
About the game
Ragnarok X: Next Generation (ROX) is a full-3D reimagining of the classic Ragnarok Online, built by Gravity, the South Korean studio behind the original series. It brings the world of Rune-Midgarts back to life —its iconic monsters, music and art style— but drops it into a modern engine with a free camera, snappier combat and cross-play across PC, Android and iOS with shared progress. At its core sits the job system: six base classes that branch into twelve specializations like Knight, Wizard, Hunter or Priest.
Its signature is a player-driven economy. Strong gear isn't bought in a shop: it drops from bosses and monsters and is freely traded between players through an auction house. Around that sit dungeons, raids, PvP arenas, guild activities and life skills such as fishing, mining and cooking, all meant to feed that market. Much of the day-to-day grind can be handed off to auto-play, a mobile-born convenience that also sets the game's pace.
The model: free-to-play and "Trade-to-Win"
ROX is free and monetized through in-app purchases. Gravity leans hard on a Trade-to-Win, not Cash-to-Win pitch: top gear isn't sold directly in the shop but comes out of the game and is traded between players. Even so, the shop is never far from view, offering convenience, cosmetics, passes and premium currency, and the progression rewards spending. You can download it free on Steam, the App Store and Google Play; just go in knowing that comfort has a price tag.
Current status
The game is live and actively serviced, and it's multiplatform. After years running in Asia —where it debuted between 2020 and 2021 under Nuverse— ROX opened up to the West in 2025 and made its global jump to PC via Steam on 25 February 2026, now operated by Gravity Game Hub. It gets seasonal updates and collaborations, and carries more than 25 million registered players worldwide. To be honest about it: its Steam reception is Mixed (hovering around 42% positive reviews) and the concurrent population on that platform is modest —enough that server merges were applied to revive under-populated worlds. Status and news are tracked on its official site.
Who is it for?
ROX is aimed at anyone chasing Ragnarok nostalgia in a modern, accessible wrapper, and at a mobile-first audience comfortable with auto-play and a long, social progression. If you're drawn to player-driven economies and trading, there's a system here with real depth. On the other hand: if you come from MMORPGs where every action is manual, the weight of auto-play and the shop may disappoint, and the Western population isn't that of a massive hit. It's a return with heavy nostalgic pull, comfortable and free to try, but also a free-to-play with the register never too far away.
