About the game

Will to Live Online is a post-apocalyptic MMORPG-shooter from Kazakh studio AlphaSoft, set in a world wrecked by nuclear catastrophe. If you've played any STALKER, the air will feel familiar: radiation zones, anomalies that kill without warning, mutants and other survivors every bit as dangerous as the wildlife. This isn't a world that welcomes you with open arms, and that hostility is a big part of the appeal.

You start by picking one of four classes —miner, mercenary, hunter and engineer— that reshape how you deal damage and soak up hits. Sooner or later you swear loyalty to one of two warring factions: the Confederation, trying to rebuild something like civilization, or Black Sunset, happy to loot the ruins instead. That choice drops you straight into the faction war that shapes much of the world.

How it plays

Combat rewards real aim: hitting your shots matters more than the numbers on your character sheet, so a clean shot beats a level of advantage. The faction-war PvP is built on top of that, but there's a quieter side too —exploration, quests, crafting and resource hunting— spread across more than a dozen maps. It's an MMO that swings between the tension of a firefight and the slow rhythm of gathering materials and building your kit piece by piece.

What you pay for and what you don't

Will to Live Online is Free to Play on Steam: no subscription, no upfront purchase. Monetization runs through a microtransaction shop aimed mostly at cosmetics and conveniences, plus a Supporters pack backing development for around $8. It's not the aggressive kind of free-to-play that walls off progress out of the box, but —as with almost any niche MMO— the progression pace and a few shortcuts nudge you toward spending. Check the current shop before you put money in.

Current state

It's been in Early Access since its April 2018 launch, kept alive by a small team with updates that keep coming, if at a slow and irregular pace. The population is thin: a few hundred concurrent players, with an all-time peak around 1,379. Reviews land in mostly positive/mixed territory (roughly 69% across more than 18,000 ratings). As of mid-2025 the servers were still up with no shutdown notice, but go in knowing this is a niche project, not a heavily supported MMO.

Who it's for

It's for anyone after a survival shooter with a contaminated-zone soul who doesn't mind a niche MMO made by a small team. If you love the STALKER atmosphere, aim-driven combat and the slow grind of a hostile world, there's a distinct identity here and a price of admission of zero. The downsides, stated plainly: production values are humble, there's plenty of grind, the population is finite, and support moves at a small studio's pace. Knowing all that, it's a post-apocalyptic oddity well worth a try.
