Winds of Valen
About the game
Winds of Valen is an old-school fantasy sandbox MMORPG that wears its Old School RuneScape influence proudly: a seamless open world, a pulled-back camera, and progression earned purely through effort, with no pay-to-skip shortcuts. There's no campaign holding your hand—you decide what to chase. It's the work of a tiny studio—Fiery Dog Games, credited as HeadCoach on itch.io—built in Unreal Engine, and it lives today on Steam.
What it is and what sets it apart
The heart of the game is the classic kill-farm-craft loop. You level combat skills (attack, defence, warding) and professions like mining, smithing, fishing, and potion-making, gather resources, and craft your own gear. Combat is target-based and mostly automatic—pick an enemy and the blows resolve on their own—while bosses ask for a bit more mechanical awareness. The hook is that every creature drops its own unique loot, so there's always a reason to hunt one more thing. It's pretty and refreshingly direct, built for players who enjoy slow, well-earned progress.

Current state
The game has been Live since November 29, 2025 (it also had an itch.io window in late October) and remains in active development, with frequent updates: new skills like archery, fishing, and alchemy, improved combat pathing, and the 'Darklands' PvP zone, where dying means losing all your items (the game warns you on the way in). Steam reviews are mostly positive overall, though the recent ones skew more mixed, with one recurring complaint: it's still thin on content and a little rough around the edges. The population is modest—what you'd expect from a niche indie.

What you pay for and what you don't
The model is genuinely Free to Play: all the base content is free, and there's no cosmetic shop or pay-to-win advantage. Since July 2026 there's an optional membership of about US$5 a month, meant to fund development: it unlocks partner content (a quest that grants a cape and opens the Valen City area, a high-level lava cavern, and a top-tier sword/shield), extra bank space, and voting rights on future updates. Additional character slots cost US$5 (one-time), and multiboxing requires extra subscriptions. The game is now distributed through Steam only: email registration and the itch.io launcher have been deprecated.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)
Winds of Valen is an honest, hype-free MMO: great if you miss the classic grind, enjoy setting your own goals, and don't mind the rough patches of a young project. On the flip side, we wouldn't recommend it if you want a guided campaign, deep endgame, or the polish of a big-studio MMO—content is still limited, the population is small, and some players have reported PC hangs. If you know what you're signing up for, it's a charming return to a kind of MMORPG that barely gets made anymore, kept afloat by a tiny studio rowing straight ahead. You can check it out and play for free on its Steam page.
