Anomaly Zone
About the game
Anomaly Zone is an open-world MMORPG set in a Zone of radiation, anomalies and mutants that borrows heavily from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The loop is straightforward: head out with a detector, track artifacts between the anomalies, then come back to camp to sell, repair and upgrade your gear.
You pick a role at the start: scientist, soldier, hunter or engineer. From there your time splits between PvE against mutants and open-PvP areas where dying costs you whatever you were carrying. That penalty is where nearly all of the game's tension comes from.
The game is old and does nothing to hide it. It started in Russia as sZone Online, spent years in Steam Early Access and reached 1.0 under its current name on October 30, 2019, with models, animations and a UI that were already behind the curve back then.
What you pay for
It is free to download on Steam or through the launcher on the official site, with nothing gated at the door. The money lives in the web store: premium access, a season pass, gold, cases and cosmetics, plus a Steam DLC, Starter Kit, at USD 19.99, with weapons, detectors and injectors that are largely time-limited. The complaint that dominates the negative Steam reviews lands right there: store gear hits harder and survives longer in open PvP.
Where it stands
Alive, but very small. On July 3, 2026 the Steam PvP and PvE servers were shut down and merged into the Russian server, with a web tool to transfer characters, and the Russian side is where whatever activity remains now sits. Steam reviews stand at 47% positive out of 1,012.
Patches keep landing: updates on July 24 and July 30, 2026, plus regular arena and hunting events. Alongside it, MALSER put Anomaly Zone Renovation into Early Access on May 29, 2026, a free-to-play relaunch with reworked weapons and economy and a three-branch role system, planned for roughly twelve months in Early Access. There is no public roadmap for the original game.
It works for anyone who wants the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mood in online form and can stomach decade-old visuals, clumsy menus and a PvP where the store matters. Anyone after a modern, populated MMORPG has the answer before installing: the Steam peak on record was 2 concurrent players when those servers closed.
