About the game

Argentum Online launched in 1999 out of La Plata and was the first MMORPG ever made in Argentina. Pablo Márquez, Fernando Testa and a group of friends built it on a modified version of Baronsoft's ORE engine. In 2003 they released the source code under the GNU GPL, and that call explains most of what the game is today: instead of a product with an owner, it became an ecosystem.

What you actually play is a top-down 2D MMORPG: characters defined by race, class and attributes, twenty-two skills spanning magic, combat and trades like mining and fishing, open cities and dungeons, clans, a player-run economy, and PvP with no safe zones across most of the map.

What you pay for, and what you don't

Free, in every flavor. The official build on Steam is listed as free to play with in-app purchases, though the studio publishes no price list or editions; a soundtrack DLC is sold separately. Noland Studios tops up funding through Patreon and Cafecito. No subscription, no box price, no limited trial.

Where it stands: alive and fragmented

The official version hit Steam on April 29, 2022 and still gets updates and tournaments: 72% positive reviews out of 844, a client limited to 64-bit Windows 10, and an anticheat that runs at kernel level. Nobody publishes concurrent player counts, not the studio and not the community.

Dozens of private servers born from the 2003 code release run alongside it. Arduz AO posted its 1.0 changelog in March 2026, and AO Forever keeps nodes in Argentina and France plus its own Steam page. They are free and live on donations; each one decides whether it sells advantages or cosmetics.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

It fits anyone after a high-friction MMORPG: a hostile world, death that costs you, an economy held up by other players, and a Spanish-speaking community twenty-five years deep. The graphics are 1999 graphics and make no attempt to hide it, the kernel-level anticheat will put some people off, and no branch publishes a dated roadmap. The call that matters most is which server you join.
