Hunter's Arena: Legends
About the game
Hunter's Arena: Legends was a melee battle royale from Korean studio Mantisco, set in an ancient Asia of demon hunters. Its pitch was an MMORPG match squeezed into half an hour: 30 players dropped onto one map, farmed monsters and bosses to level up, looted dungeons, and fought each other as the play area closed in.
Combat sat at the center of the design: aerial combos and counters, closer to a fighting game than to the long-range shooting the genre usually runs on. The roster reached 17 hunters across melee and ranged styles, spread over three modes: solo, trios, and a Tag Match that let you swap between two characters inside the same match.
What you paid for
It was a classic buy to play: one purchase, no subscription. On Steam it sold for under twenty dollars and dropped to $9.99 on several occasions. On console it launched as a PlayStation exclusive and, between August 3 and September 6, 2021, it was one of the free PlayStation Plus games, which is how most of its PS4 and PS5 player base got it.
Current status: servers offline
Mantisco announced the shutdown on the game's Discord on March 28, 2024. The PC version left the Steam catalog on April 15, end of service was set for October 31, and the servers held on a few days longer, dark by November 14 at the latest. The PS4 and PS5 edition was pulled from the store on November 8.
The numbers explain the ending. The all-time concurrent player peak on Steam was 1,079, and in 2024 the yearly high was 5. The PlayStation Plus giveaway produced a wave of installs that never became a community, and the studio never published population figures of its own.
What's left today
Nothing playable. There's no legitimate way to buy it, and owning it in your library gets you nowhere either, because the whole game ran on online servers. It was a game for melee players, and what survives is the idea: a battle royale settled with combos instead of crosshairs. In that same shutdown message Mantisco said an extraction-genre Hunter's Arena was in the works; since March 2024 it has given no date and no details.
