About the game

Lineage II is the MMORPG NCSOFT launched in 2003 in South Korea (2004 in the West), and one of the games that helped define the genre on both sides of the globe. It drops you into Aden, a vast open world of medieval fantasy — but its real heart isn't solo questing. It's the large-scale war between clans and alliances fighting over power.

Siege warfare and guild politics

Lineage II's signature has always been castle sieges: massive PvP battles where clans take strongholds by force, and those strongholds grant power, income and status. Everything else orbits that — a player-driven economy, alliances forged and betrayed, and a long, demanding progression grind that rewards invested time and group organization. It's a deeply social and political MMO: your real strength isn't just your character, it's the clan standing behind you.

How you pay: free-to-play with a shop

Lineage II has been free-to-play since November 2011 (with the Goddess of Destruction expansion); before that it ran on a subscription. Getting into the base game costs nothing, and monetization runs through the item shop, the L2 Store: XP boosters, runes, upgrade materials, cosmetics and bundles. That model speeds up progression, but it draws steady pay-to-win criticism, because spending weighs heavily on a character's power and PvP competitiveness. As an alternative, there are the Lineage II Classic servers, with their own paid setup built around the original, harsher and slower experience.

Where it stands today

More than 20 years on, Lineage II is still live and in active development. Through 2025 it got fresh content — the Throne update in July and a Summer Update at the end of the month — alongside regular maintenance patches. NCSOFT keeps a steady cadence of events and patches and has added new classes, like the Death Knight. The population concentrates on the active official servers and lives alongside a large scene of private servers offering classic or pay-to-win-free versions. You can check the game's status and latest news on the official site.

Who it's for

Lineage II is for players who want a classic MMO — social, fiercely competitive, with a punishing curve, a veteran community and guild politics as its engine. If you love belonging to a clan, fighting over territory and playing the long game, there's little else like it. But let's be honest: it's not a gentle entry point. The grind is demanding, much of the experience revolves around group PvP, and the shop's weight on competitiveness can frustrate anyone who'd rather not spend. If you're after a modern, accessible, solo-friendly MMO, this isn't your game; if you want one with history, scale and real consequences, it still has plenty to give.
