Project: Gorgon
About the game
Project: Gorgon is a fantasy sandbox MMORPG made by Elder Game, a tiny independent studio founded by veterans of classic MMOs like Asheron's Call and EverQuest. Its whole design cuts against the grain: there are no classes, there's no tutorial holding your hand, and the world is full of secrets that only surface if you're willing to explore and experiment. It's the kind of game built for anyone who misses the freedom and mystery of old-school MMOs and is happy to trade expensive production values for personality and depth.
A classless world where you build your own character
The heart of Gorgon is its skill system: you don't pick a class at character creation — instead, every skill levels up as you use it. There are 21 combat skills, dozens of trade skills (blacksmithing, alchemy, cooking and many more) and even beast abilities, and in combat you can slot two at a time and mix them however you like. That opens up builds that defy any template —a swordsman who also throws ice spells, an archer who shapeshifts into an animal— and means two players rarely end up playing the same way. Progression isn't dictated by a rigid tree; it's shaped by whatever you choose to practice.

Curiosity over hand-holding
Gorgon rewards exploration like few modern MMOs. The world explains almost nothing: its secrets, recipes and strangest systems only show up if you go poke around and try things. You can turn into a cow or a werewolf, learn to play music, set up your own shop to sell to other players, or stumble onto hidden systems no one told you existed. That feeling of genuine discovery —of unlocking the game with your own head instead of following an arrow— is what sets it apart most, and what keeps its community hooked.

Business model: what you pay for and what you don't
Project: Gorgon is buy to play: the base game costs $24.99 on Steam and gives you full access, with no mandatory subscription. There's an optional VIP subscription from $11.99/month that adds quality-of-life perks (more storage, progression bonuses and other conveniences), plus cosmetic packs and extra character slots in the store. None of it is required to play and finish the game — the sub is an option, not a wall. You can check it out and buy it on its Steam page.
Where it stands now
The game is live and hit version 1.0 on January 28, 2026, after nearly eight years in Early Access on Steam (since 2018) and a 2015 Kickstarter campaign. The launch brought in the V2 character models and, per the studio, the largest and most complex map they'd ever built. On Steam it holds Very Positive reviews (around 81% across more than 4,100 opinions), though recent reviews dipped to mixed over complaints about performance and optimization — worth keeping in mind. After the launch surge, which peaked at over 2,200 concurrent players in early February 2026, Elder Game confirmed mid-year that it's already working on new content.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)
Let's be honest: Gorgon isn't for everyone. The visuals are humble, the interface shows its age, and progression is slow and grindy; if you're after big-studio production or instant gratification, this isn't your MMO. But if what pulls you in is total freedom, unguided discovery, and the deep, interlocking systems of games like RuneScape or Star Wars Galaxies, it's a quirky gem bursting with personality and a loyal community that forgives its rough edges for what nothing else offers.
