Monsters & Memories is a fantasy MMORPG built to play like the ones from the late '90s, with EverQuest as its stated reference. It comes from Niche Worlds Cult, an independent studio that has been building it since 2020 and streams its own development.

The design runs against the modern standard: an open world with no instanced dungeons, where groups set up camps and compete over spawns with whoever got there first. Progression is slow and the classes are written to lean on one another, so going solo does not take you far.

The world also moves on its own. Spawns and harvesting react to the time of day, the day of the week, lunar cycles and seasons, and much of the interaction runs through text verbs instead of menus. On-screen guidance is minimal: working out where things are is part of playing.

The game has been in development since 2020, with a team that grew from around 30 people to 49. Early access is set for October 1, 2026, pushed back from June because the studio wanted more time on classes, itemization, progression and performance, with housing, mounts and religion still unfinished.

That first version opens with the Descent into the Deep module, nine playable races, every class, four starting zones and a 1-60 leveling path spread across three servers: two PvE, one allowing boxing and one not, plus one PvP. The studio has confirmed there will be no wipes once early access begins.

It runs on a subscription: $15 per month per account, content updates included. There is no box price, no in-game store and no microtransactions, and subscriptions can be gifted. There is no Steam page either, so distribution goes through the official site.

You can try it before paying: the studio runs free open playtests, and the one in late May 2026 drew more than 10,500 participants. Take them, because the game is demanding by design. Downtime, fighting over a camp and depending on your group are the pitch, and anyone after a modern pace with objectives pinned on the map will find this hostile.
