About the game

Pax Dei is a social sandbox MMO set in a medieval world where the myths are real: ghosts, folkloric creatures, and magic no one questions. There are no NPCs and no handholding quests—players drive everything. You'll chop, mine, farm, and refine materials to raise a home in a valley, form a clan, and leave your mark on a persistent world. Built by Mainframe Industries on Unreal Engine 5, it bets on atmosphere and freedom over polished combat or constant direction.

A questless world, driven by its people

The heart of Pax Dei is building and thriving together. The economy is entirely player-crafted: no vendors make things for you, so every tool, wall, and weapon comes out of the players' own chain of labor. The persistent world is split across four regionsAncien, Merrie, Kerys, and Inis Gallia—on separate shards, and the best stories come from delving into caves, defending settlements, and coordinating with others. Don't expect a story thread or a guided endgame: what you get is a vast canvas and the freedom to decide what to do with it.

What you pay for—and what you don't

Pax Dei is buy-to-play with an optional subscription. The base purchase runs about USD 29.99 (with frequent sales that push it toward half price) and includes one month of Premium membership and one plot to start building. You can grab it on Steam and the official store, and it's also on PC Game Pass and GeForce Now.

The subscription is only needed to own and maintain plots—the land where you raise your settlement. Without it you can explore, craft, adventure, and play socially with no limits; the only thing you can't do is keep a plot of your own. Plans scale with how many plots and characters you want: from a plot-less Premium membership (~USD 3.99/month) up to a four-plot tier (~USD 18.99/month), with one- and two-plot steps in between. If you cancel, your plot's contents are saved until you return. This land-'rental' setup is one of the community's most debated points.

Where it stands today

After nearly 16 months of Early Access, Pax Dei hit version 1.0 on October 16, 2025 and is now live, with the world reset into its four current regions. Reception is mixed: on Steam it hovers around half positive reviews, with the most recent ones running a bit better. The population is modest and fluctuating—far from its launch peak—though by mid-2026 it showed signs of recovery. The studio is keeping a post-1.0 roadmap with systems like Feudal Shrines and Alliances on the way.

Who it's for

Pax Dei is for players who love a social survival-and-building sandbox more than the guided progression of a classic MMORPG. Its world is vast and gorgeous, and the feeling of raising something of your own alongside a clan is hard to match. But go in with your eyes open: the pace is slow, the grind is demanding, the combat isn't as polished as the atmosphere, and the endgame is still limited. If you want clear goals and steady rewards, it may frustrate you; if what draws you in is inhabiting a world and writing your own story in it, few MMOs hand you this much canvas.
