About the game
Tower of Fantasy is an open-world action MMORPG with an anime look and a science-fiction setting, made by Hotta Studio. It all takes place on Aida, an alien planet left in ruins after an advanced civilization collapsed, and from the outset the game leans on a huge shared world you explore by climbing, gliding and driving vehicles. Its obvious benchmark —the one that has followed it since day one— is Genshin Impact, but the DNA here is more MMO: shared servers, a persistent world and other players moving around you.
Combat, weapons and Simulacra
Combat is fast and built around swapping weapons on the fly to chain styles and elements. Instead of a fixed roster of heroes, your own character wields the weapons of the Simulacra —recreations of various characters— and inherits their abilities and their look. That shifts the core of progression toward which weapons you collect and how you combine them: building a solid trio of weapons that feed off each other matters more than leveling any single character.
A world meant to be played with others
Even though it has a long story campaign, Tower of Fantasy isn't meant to be played alone: co-op exploration, dungeons, world bosses and PvP modes all share the same map. It's one of those games where social content and the persistent world weigh as much as the main adventure.
How you pay (and what you don't)
It's Free to Play on every platform —PC, Steam, iOS, Android and PS4/PS5, though the PlayStation version runs on its own servers and doesn't share progress with PC and mobile—. The original model is gacha: weapons and Simulacra come from banner pulls using premium currencies (Red and Gold Nucleus), with guaranteed pity (an SR or better every 10 pulls and a guaranteed SSR at 80 on the weapon banner). Around that sit a skins-and-mounts shop, a season pass and events. Some currency is earned by playing; some is purchase-only.
In November 2025 Hotta added an important alternative: the Warp Server, a global gacha-free server (Ver.5.5, Nov 25, 2025) where weapons and Simulacra are earned by playing —a mission gallery, a daily weapon giveaway, no weapon Ascension or Matrices—, with outfits, accessories and mounts also obtainable in-game. It's a direct nod to players who asked for progression that feels more like a classic MMO and less tied to luck and your wallet.
Current state
The game is live and actively supported. In 2026 it moves along the 5.x version line with a major patch every four to six weeks —for instance Ver.5.7 'Witch of Time' (March 2026) and Ver.5.8 'Wings of Icarus' (April 14, 2026)—, each adding new Simulacra, weapons, events and content. The flip side is population: it has dropped sharply from its launch peak, and today third-party trackers point to tens of thousands of daily players on Steam and on the order of hundreds of thousands of monthly actives across mobile and console, trending downward. The gacha-free Warp Server is, in large part, Hotta's bid to win players back and keep them.
Who is it for?
If you're drawn to an anime open world with nimble combat and don't mind —or actively enjoy— the social layer of an MMO, Tower of Fantasy is an easy pick, especially now that the Warp Server lets you try it without leaning on gacha. It's a good gateway for anyone after a shared-world F2P with constant updates; you can grab it from its official site.
On the other hand, it pays to keep expectations realistic: the critical reception was lukewarm (65/100 on OpenCritic and Metacritic), the original server's gacha model can get heavy if you're chasing the best weapons, and the smaller-than-launch community shows. It's no longer the phenomenon it was in 2022, but it's still a big, free, ever-growing world for anyone who clicks with what it offers.
