Star Trek Online brings Undiscovered to consoles: the Klingon arc Cryptic pulled out of retirement

WickedQuest · Jul 21, 2026 · 0 reads

Star Trek Online's Season 36 hits PlayStation and Xbox on July 29 with "The Ultimate Klingon" rebuilt from scratch, two Voyager voices back in the cast, and a full rework of Deep Space Encounters.

Star Trek Online: Undiscovered — Season 36 of Cryptic Studios' free-to-play MMO — lands on PlayStation and Xbox on July 29, 2026, roughly three weeks after its July 7 PC debut. This isn't a maintenance patch: it kicks off something the studio has been promising for years, a ground-up rebuild of the old "The Ultimate Klingon" arc, and it arrives bundled with a systems overhaul that touches content people actually play every day.

A mission the game itself had retired

"The Ultimate Klingon" has been around since Star Trek Online launched in 2010, but in 2018 Cryptic pulled it out of the main story progression: next to the game's modern missions, it had aged badly. Undiscovered brings it back rebuilt — voice acting, new cutscenes, updated environments and rewritten story beats — starting with the episode "The Kuvah'Magh". Same narrative skeleton, 2026 production values on top.

The setup: after four years of war and with the Undine threat growing, the Federation puts a ceasefire on the table before the Klingon High Council. You're working to build support for President Okeg's peace proposal while old grudges — and an ancient Klingon prophecy — threaten to blow the whole thing apart.

Picardo and LoCicero are back

The hook for anyone who watched Voyager: Robert Picardo returns as the Doctor and Lisa LoCicero is back as Lieutenant Miral Paris, daughter of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres. The original mission already revolved around Miral and her ties to the Kuvah'Magh prophecy; the new one adds the Doctor — her godfather — to the cast, turning what used to feel like filler into a reunion with actual weight. The official launch trailer gives you a sense of the presentation jump.

Deep Space Encounters, rebuilt

The other half of the season is less flashy but probably matters more long-term: Deep Space Encounters go from a repetitive shooting gallery to procedural missions spread across the Alpha, Beta and Delta Quadrants, with far more objective variety. They now also grant bonus Endeavor XP and daily event progress, which turns content most players skipped into a reasonable stop on the daily loop.

The event and the free ship

As usual for STO, the season comes with a limited-time event. Finish it and the K'vort Temporal Flight Deck Raptor is yours for free, customizable into its The Next Generation and Lower Decks variants. It ships with the Hunting Pack Escorts universal console, the Imperial Pressure starship trait, and a brand-new experimental weapon, the Rapid Fire Disruptor Heavy Emitter. For console accounts starting now, that's a concrete goal for the first few weeks.

Why it matters

Star Trek Online is closing in on 17 years, and its problem isn't a lack of content but dead weight: hundreds of hours of wildly uneven missions. Cryptic spending a whole season rebuilding old material instead of piling on new stuff is a sign of serious upkeep — the kind that tends to extend an MMO's life more than any expansion does. Nice touch: the update's splash screen is a direct homage to the Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country poster, as Massively OP noted in its coverage of the announcement.
