Champions of Regnum
About the game
Champions of Regnum —formerly known as Regnum Online— is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG built entirely around a single idea: war between realms. When you create your character you pick one of three warring sides —Alsius, the frozen northern power; Ignis, the desert empire; and Syrtis, the forest kingdom— and you fight for it for the rest of the game. It's an old-school design, a direct heir to Dark Age of Camelot, more concerned with coordination among dozens of players than with modern polish.
There are three base classes —warrior, archer and mage—, each with two specializations, giving six archetypes with clearly defined battlefield roles: tanks that hold the line, healers that keep it standing, archers that punish from range and mages that break formations. This isn't a game of guided campaigns or personal stories: the engine is the constant clash of three factions that never quite win.
The war zone
The heart of the game is the war zone, the central territory where the three realms collide. Player armies capture and defend forts and castles, hunt the rival realm's gems to weaken it, and summon dragons and bosses capable of turning the tide of an assault. When the map fills up, few games deliver like this one: hundreds of players pushing lines, ambushes, retreats and counterattacks that feel meaningful because territory really does change hands.
Free, funded by Ximerin
Regnum is free-to-play with no mandatory subscription: the entire base game can be played for free. The model runs on Ximerin, the premium currency you buy with real money and spend in the in-game store. It mostly buys cosmetics (armor dyes, hairstyles) and conveniences: extra character slots, experience boosts, health and mana potions, repair tools, war shields and teleport points. Go in knowing it's not a purely cosmetic F2P: the community has argued for years over how much of an edge certain war consumables and XP boosts really give. It's available both on its official site and on Steam.
Current state and community
The game is live and playable, with maintenance and balance patches still active (the version branch is on 1.33.x, with updates through 2025). It's developed by the Argentine studio NGD Studios / Nimble Giant Entertainment (Buenos Aires), and it's one of the biggest MMOs to come out of Latin America; after Saber Interactive acquired the studio in 2020, Regnum gets low-cadence support rather than major development. Its weak point is population: it keeps a loyal community, mostly Spanish-speaking and German, but on servers and at hours outside those cores the world —a huge one— can feel deserted, and reviews single this out as its biggest drag.
Who is it for?
Regnum is for anyone after old-school massive, territorial PvP who isn't put off by a previous generation's graphics or the lack of a campaign to hold their hand. If you come from Dark Age of Camelot or any three-faction MMO, you'll recognize the hook right away. If instead you want cutting-edge visuals, a guided story or worlds that are always full at any hour, this isn't your game. It shines when the map fills up and war breaks out, and it feels empty when it doesn't: finding the realm and the time slot with people is half the experience, and the half that decides whether its RvR really clicks for you.
