About the game

Guild Wars 3 is ArenaNet's next action MMORPG, from the studio that spent two decades building a reputation for doing things its own way within the genre. It's their first new game since Guild Wars 2 (2012) and the first Guild Wars to reach consoles. The pitch carries over the pillars that always set the series apart —no monthly subscription, no pay-to-win, and horizontal progression that keeps old gear relevant— while pushing combat toward movement and positioning rather than the stats stitched into your armor. The banner the studio keeps raising is simple and unusual for the genre: respect the player's time.

What sets it apart

The design twist is in the combat. Against MMOs where your power lives in inventory numbers, Guild Wars 3 bets that how you move and where you stand matters more than the armor piece you have equipped. Horizontal progression points the same way: the goal is that a patch or an expansion won't force you to throw away what you already earned and start the gear treadmill over again. It's the same philosophy that earned the original Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 their audiences, rebuilt from the ground up for this generation.

The setting steps off the beaten path too. The story is set more than a thousand years before the first Guild Wars, in Orr —a wild, magic-soaked frontier long before it became the ruined land longtime fans know. You play a Vaelwarden, part of a guild sworn to protect the land's nature spirits, riding a Seeker mount that doubles as your bond to the world. It's built for solo or group play, leaning on lasting connections: between players, with memorable NPCs, and with the spirits of Orr themselves.

The business model: what you pay for and what you don't

Guild Wars 3 is buy-to-play: pay once and play, in the same vein as the original Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. ArenaNet's Colin Johanson confirmed it publicly and was blunt about it: no subscription fee, no battle pass, and no pay-to-win mechanics (MassivelyOP, GameSpot). Monetization would run through a cosmetics and optional-content shop, with no combat power for sale. The honest flip side: the actual numbers don't exist yet. Price, editions, and shop details are expected to be announced, per the studio, toward late 2026, so for now the model is confirmed in philosophy but not in figures.

Where it stands

The game was announced on June 5, 2026 at Summer Game Fest and remains in active development: beyond the reveal trailer, there's still no public playable gameplay. The roadmap ArenaNet laid out points to a first beta in fall 2027 and a launch estimated for 2028 (no official date), on PC and PS5. You can already wishlist it on Steam and the PlayStation Store. The reveal landed very well, largely thanks to that explicit promise to respect the player's time against the artificial-engagement mechanics that dominate the genre (official site, MassivelyOP).

Who it's for (and who it isn't yet)

If you're drawn to a co-op MMO that doesn't charge you to keep playing or force you to rebuild your gear every season, and you come from the Guild Wars lineage, this is one of the genre's most promising announcements in years. It also aims at anyone who'd rather enjoy an MMO solo without being locked out of content. Now the fair warning: this isn't a game yet, it's a promise. There's no playable gameplay, the beta is more than a year out, and launch is estimated only for 2028; the model sounds flawless, but the pricing and shop details —the very things that usually decide whether a good plan survives contact with reality— aren't known yet. Worth following closely and adding to your wishlist, with expectations calibrated to a project that still has most of the road ahead of it.
