Stars Reach Says It's "An Update or So" From Alpha — and Early Access

WickedQuest · Jul 21, 2026 · 0 reads

In its latest development stream, Playable Worlds sketched out the jump from pre-alpha to alpha for Raph Koster's sandbox: a couple more updates and the MMORPG should be ready for Steam Early Access.

Stars Reach, the sandbox MMORPG from Playable Worlds — the studio led by Raph Koster, one of the names behind Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies — is closer than it looked to leaving pre-alpha behind. In its latest development stream, the team walked through what's left before the game reaches alpha status and, with it, Steam Early Access. The line that stuck: the game is "an update or so away" from that jump. Massively Overpowered reported it from the broadcast.

What stands between Stars Reach and alpha

The stream wasn't a date announcement so much as a to-do list. Koster was explicit about it: "If we knock out all of these things, which I think is going to happen over the next couple of updates, then we will be at alpha and ready for early access." Translation: alpha here isn't a marketing label, it's an internal checklist of systems that need to be finished and stable before anyone gets charged for entry.

What they showed in progress mixes quality-of-life work with foundational content: a more intuitive crafting interface and several new crafting stations, a rebuild of Haven (the starter city, already the centerpiece of a major update earlier this year), buildable dome structures, revisions to weapons and their particle and shot-mode effects, world generation improvements, and progress on the Fae race. None of it is spectacular in isolation; together it's roughly the difference between "we're testing this" and "this can be sold."

The wipe, the fireside chat, and the update cadence

The immediate context is The Great Wipe, the reset the studio completed in mid-July that left the game with reworked systems and a refreshed look — announced in their July 17 newsletter. The next day, Koster held a live fireside chat to walk through the big changes and tease what's coming. If you've been following the game from a distance, that combination is the tell: wipes at this scale happen when a studio considers a stage closed.

The other takeaway from the stream points past launch: the team promised "big chonky updates" once Early Access begins, instead of the weekly drip pre-alpha players got used to. It's a reasonable change of pace — patches further apart but with more substance each — though it also means longer gaps between news. Worth noting before anyone is caught off guard.

What it means if you're waiting

Early Access has been pinned to this summer since the June announcement, backed by an official trailer, but the Steam page still reads "to be announced." With July well underway and "a couple more updates" to go, the window is getting tight: making it inside summer is possible, but there isn't much slack.

On the business model, the studio has shown its hand: access today is bought through founders packs, Early Access is expected to run at least six months, and the plan is to sunset those packs and go free-to-play at 1.0. That's useful information for MMO players: paying now buys you early entry and a say in how the simulation gets tuned, not a permanent privilege.

The underlying pitch is the same one that turned heads on day one: a shared universe on a single server, planets with ecosystems that genuinely react — rivers you can reroute, wildfires that spread, terrain that collapses — plus player-driven professions and economy. It's an enormous bet, and one still unproven at scale. That the team is talking checklist rather than a date carved in stone is, honestly, the best signal from the stream: alpha arrives when the list is done, and not before.
