Soul Saver Online
About the game
Soul Saver Online is a Korean 2D side-scrolling MMORPG on its second life: it launched in 2008 as Ghost Online, shut its global servers in 2009, and came back under a new name on July 19, 2012. It reached Steam on April 5, 2017.
The world is one where the dead never finished leaving: the Justice and Chaos factions fight loose demons while you collect souls from fallen enemies and equip them to raise your stats. Around that sit five classes —archer, magician, fencer, fighter and assassin—, stat points assigned by hand, and platforming maps packed with monsters.
Free, still running, paid for by an item shop
It is free to play with no subscription: download it from the official site or from Steam, and the money comes from an item shop reachable in-game and through the web. There is no public price list, no editions, no passes. That shop weighs on progression, and the studio has said nothing about it.
It is still live and still maintained: the official site posted an update note on July 15, 2026, and an emergency maintenance the next day, after items from the revamped Novice Gift were flagged as tradable by mistake; the team said it would review the accounts that exploited it. There is no public roadmap and no official player numbers.
Who it's for
It works for anyone after a MapleStory-like with a hook of its own who doesn't mind a 2012 game: map grinding, slow progression, and a small community where everyone knows everyone. Anyone coming for full servers or a modern interface leaves in ten minutes.
The bad parts are in plain sight: dated interface, uneven optimization, and a thin Western population, with a client that still asks for Windows XP-era requirements and about 13 GB of disk. Steam reviews sit at Mixed, 66% positive out of 372.
