About the game

Camelot Unchained is a fantasy MMORPG that bets everything on a single idea: three-realm RvR warfare. The Arthurians, the Vikings and the Tuatha Dé Danann—each realm founded by one of three brothers drawn from its mythology—fight over a persistent world where the enemy is always other players. Behind it is Mark Jacobs, the designer of Dark Age of Camelot, and the project makes the most sense as his attempt to recapture the realm-vs-realm formula that marked a generation.

What sets it apart from other MMOs is where it spends its technical effort. Instead of PvE dungeons or scripted raids, the heart of the game is massive battles of hundreds of players, held together by a physics engine that runs server-side, plus a block-based building system for raising keeps and then besieging them. There's no single-player story to hold your hand: the content is generated by the open faction war itself.

Three-realm RvR is the heart of Camelot Unchained.

What you pay for

Right now the game is bought on Steam for USD 9.99 in early access, and that's all it takes: there's no active subscription, and that price grants access to every race, class and piece of content released so far, on the same servers the longtime backers already use. The studio has been clear about the plan ahead: early access will split into two editions—a 'curated' Base edition meant as an entry point, and the War Unending Edition with everything, with the option to upgrade between them at any time—and in the long run the game will move to a monthly subscription, though they've promised not to charge it until the servers are available 24/7. One thing to watch: the purchase price will keep rising as development moves forward. You can check the current offer on its Steam page.

Where it stands

Camelot Unchained has been in Steam Early Access since June 2, 2026, aiming to leave that phase in December 2026. It's developed by Unchained Entertainment (formerly City State Entertainment, renamed in 2024 after taking investment from a16z Games), with Jacobs at the helm and an announced cadence of a new build every two weeks and a major update each month. The launch, though, was rough: mostly negative reviews on Steam, a peak of barely around 520 concurrent players that fell to double digits within weeks, and complaints about login and server problems and how thin the content is. The studio had been consolidating: in September 2025 it shut down its spin-off Final Stand: Ragnarök to pour everything into this game.

A persistent world where the war between factions never stops.

It's worth taking it for what it is: a project still half-built. It grew out of a 2013 Kickstarter and spent well over a decade in development before reaching Steam, and it's still missing classes, zones and siege systems to hit its target of ten playable archetypes. What's there works as the foundation of the RvR, not as a finished MMO.

Keeps from the block-based building system get raised and besieged.

Who it's for

Camelot Unchained is a niche game, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's for players who miss old-school realm-vs-realm MMO combat—the hundred-strong battles, the sieges, the faction identity—and have the patience to follow a development that's still underway. If you're after polished PvE, a guided story, or a game with months of content from day one, this isn't your place, at least not yet. But if the mere idea of an open, persistent war between three realms sparks something, it's worth watching closely—and worth trying with eyes open about where it currently stands.
