About the game

GrandChase is a 2D action MMORPG with an anime art style that first launched in Korea in 2003 and became a free-to-play staple for a whole generation. The pitch is direct and arcade-flavored: you pick from a huge roster of characters —each with its own fighting style, combos and skills— and dive into the dungeons of the fantasy kingdom of Bermesiah, brawling left to right through waves of enemies and bosses. It isn't trying to out-scale modern MMORPGs; it delivers its own thing with a distinct identity.

What sets it apart

The heart of the game is its fast side-scrolling combat and its character-by-character progression: instead of leveling a single avatar, you unlock and master different heroes, each a whole way of playing. You can tackle content solo or in parties of up to four, but where the system really shines is on the competitive side: its PvP modes reward execution and mastery of each character over raw gear, so the better player wins, not the one who farmed the most. That blend of action, technique and a wide roster is what set it apart from the MMOs of its era.

Business model

It's fully free to play: you download and install it for free from Steam with no paywall around the main content. Monetization runs through an item shop centered on cosmetics, avatars, pets, quality-of-life boosts and extra character and inventory slots. Two currencies coexist: the one you earn by playing (GP), gained from quests and PvP, and a premium currency bought with real money. In practice, the community tends to call the recent events fairly f2p-friendly, though the cosmetic catalog and certain convenience items still nudge you to spend. Nothing that defines the combat sits behind a purchase, but the door to your wallet is always open.

Current status

The game is live, but with a back-and-forth history. After shutting its servers down between 2013 and 2015 —when KOG steered players toward Elsword— the studio brought it back as GrandChase Classic, relaunched on Steam after a 2021 closed beta that restored the classic version. Today it gets ongoing support: events, balance tweaks and reworks like the skill-tree redesigns and the armor sets via Awakening. On Steam its reviews sit at 'Mixed' (roughly 66% positive across more than 25,000 reviews), and the population is modest: around ~2,000 concurrent players in mid-2026, with a recent peak near 7,500 in May 2025 and an all-time high close to 80,000. There's also an active private-server scene. You can check the official status on the KOG page.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

GrandChase is for players who love fast arcade combat, the methodical progression of mastering one character after another and a heavy dose of nostalgia: if you played the original back in the day, Classic is exactly what you remember. It's also a friendly entry point for anyone who wants an action MMO that doesn't demand paying to progress. But it's worth being honest: this is a niche game with a limited population, a 2D look that shows its age, and a few corners where the cash shop pushes hard. If you're after huge worlds, cutting-edge graphics or a massive community, this isn't your game. If you want action that's direct, technical and full of character, it still holds up on its own terms.
