Stars Reach's third patch went wrong: hours of downtime and lost items on one starbase

Playable Worlds pushed Stars Reach hotfix 8.4.3, its third since early access opened. A planned half-hour downtime stretched into several hours and worlds came back with no objects on them.

Playable Worlds shipped hotfix 8.4.3 for Stars Reach, the third patch since the sandbox opened early access on August 18. The studio led with an admission: the update did not go as planned, capping a launch where the servers were already struggling.

The maintenance window was planned for half an hour and stretched into several hours. A hardware provisioning problem on the backend brought worlds back up with no objects on them at all, so the team went into maintenance mode and rolled the servers back to the backup taken right before the patch.

The rollback left damage behind: one starbase in the Letiemopas sector lost items, though planets and governments came through intact. Playable Worlds also rolled out a public status page to track incidents live, cross-posted to the #server-status channel on Discord.

Of what the patch actually brings, the fix players will feel most is the one for rubberbanding on Haven and several other planets: a server-side memory leak. After the day they had, the studio held it back that night and is releasing it as a rolling release, applied as each server restarts on its own.

The rest targets the reworked crafting that arrived in the last big patch before launch: data bugs blocking progression in the engineering and tailoring trees, and a recipe rebalance that made some players lose recipes outright. More glitches keep surfacing, and the studio is asking for reports.

They also fixed the starter repair kits the game hands out, which simply didn't work, and purchased items no longer drop on death. Collections and maps now count as one across every instance of Haven and Crucible. Still outstanding: an asteroid in the Cohufotag sector that has started growing grass.
