XL Games unveils ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom, a brand-new MMORPG built for PC

XL Games has confirmed ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom, a PC-first MMORPG targeting 2027, with Kakao Games handling global publishing.

The ArcheAge franchise is adding another chapter before it has even wrapped the ones already in the works. XL Games has confirmed the official title of its next MMORPG, ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom, a game being built exclusively for PC and targeting a 2027 launch. Alongside it, Kakao Games signed the global publishing deal, so the project already has a partner lined up to take it to international markets.

Development is led by Kim Kyung-tae, who served as the first head of planning and producer on the original 2013 ArcheAge. The studio's pitch is to reinterpret the IP's core values —its deep world, its high degree of freedom, its large-scale battles— and align them with what a modern MMORPG is expected to deliver, rather than reheating a formula that's over a decade old.

Another piece in an increasingly crowded franchise

The striking part is the timing: XL Games and Kakao are announcing a new MMORPG while the franchise still has unfinished projects on the table. Since the 2013 ArcheAge, the Korean IP has branched out in several directions —including the 2023 mobile ArcheAge War and the announced ArcheAge Chronicles— and Strait of Freedom joins as the entry built for PC from the ground up. For MMO players the signal cuts both ways: there's genuine appetite to revive the brand, but also a risk of the saga spreading itself across too many fronts at once.

What we still don't know

For now the announcement is more about intent than concrete detail. There's no gameplay, no exact date beyond the 2027 window, and —the point the community will scrutinize most— no confirmed business model. The original ArcheAge spent years dogged by complaints about its pay-to-win mechanics, so how XL Games handles monetization in Strait of Freedom will matter as much as any promise about open world and freedom. It's worth waiting to see something playable before drawing conclusions.
