Evercold's reveal lifted FFXIV sales, but not profit

Square Enix's quarterly report shows 12.7 billion yen in MMO segment sales on the back of higher player activity after the Evercold reveal, with operating income nearly flat because the company is already booking the expansion's costs.
Square Enix closed the April-June quarter with ¥78.4 billion in net sales, up 32.3% year on year, and ¥17.0 billion in operating income, up 88.6%. Inside that total, the MMO segment, which in practice means Final Fantasy XIV, brought in ¥12.7 billion.
Operating income for that segment landed at ¥3.6 billion, barely above last year's. The company's own explanation has two halves: player activity improved after the Evercold announcement, but the costs of getting the expansion out the door are already on the books.
Evercold was revealed on April 24 at the Anaheim Fan Festival and is the MMORPG's sixth expansion. It arrives in January 2027, and Square Enix still hasn't said which day of January.
What the report doesn't give is how many people are playing. Square Enix doesn't publish FFXIV subscriber counts and didn't this time either: the only reference is that mention of improved activity, with no number attached to it.
The quarter closes on June 30, so both patch 7.55 and the game's arrival on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4 fall outside it. The quarter's push came from elsewhere: HD Games went from ¥8.9 billion to ¥17.7 billion in sales on new and catalog titles.
