Might of Spells opens its alpha on July 31, after a hefty delay

Isometric indie MMORPG Might of Spells kicks off its open alpha on July 31 with a beefier build: private islands, more regions, and even high scores. It aimed for February and arrived late, but it arrived.

Indie MMORPG Might of Spells took the better late than never saying to heart. Studio Nucate confirmed its open alpha starts this July 31 at 7:00 PM CET, after originally aiming for February. The delay was substantial, but the team makes up for it by opening the doors with a more advanced build than the one it had promised.

This build adds a fair bit over what was planned: private islands players can terraform and decorate as their own home, more regions to explore across the open world, and — oddly enough — high scores for those who want to compete for the top spot. It's a notable jump for an alpha, and it suggests Nucate preferred to wait and show something more complete rather than hit the date with the bare minimum.

What Might of Spells is

It's an open-world MMORPG with an old-school soul: a top-down perspective inspired by the classics, with the option to toggle between that nostalgic view and a more modern isometric presentation to suit your taste. The world is connected with no loading screens, starts on the mysterious Soul Island —where lost souls seek redemption— and offers four vocations: warrior, archer, wizard and shaman. The focus is on combat, exploration, a player-driven economy and straightforward PvP.

The model is free-to-play, and Nucate promises to avoid the harsher pay-to-win mechanics — something always worth watching closely in such an early project. Anyone who wants to try it can jump in from its Steam page or follow the news on the official Discord.

Let's be honest about the scale: this is a small indie, not a big-studio launch, and an open alpha is exactly that — an early phase, with broken things and half-baked systems. Even so, the pitch of bringing back the flavor of classic top-down MMOs with modern views and no aggressive pay-to-win has real appeal for anyone who misses that subgenre. If it speaks to you, July 31 is the date to peek in at no cost.
